DREAM Charter School third grader Souwadou is improving her reading skills through an innovative teaching technique that promotes creative self-expression. She is participating in a new program called WIN, or "What I Need." In small WIN groups, Souwadou gets extra support for reading and story comprehension. One of the many methods that Intervention Specialist Leticia Sanchez uses to keep Souwadou engaged is to ask her to read aloud in the voice of story characters. She will roar the text like a mighty lion or whisper the words like a tiny mouse. Ms. Sanchez is already seeing increased interest and confidence: "I ask the other kids, 'Who else wants to read like a storyteller?' and all the hands shoot up."
