Many DREAM Charter School families were concerned that they wouldn't be able to help their young scholars with their math homework. DREAM responded by inviting families to learn CGI, or "Cognitively Guided Instruction," in special family workshops. With CGI, teachers personalize story problems that feature real-life scenarios using the students' names. At "Pizza Fraction Night" for example, families learned how to support their scholars through interactive activities that gave them different strategies for complex math problems. Now at the supermarket, fifth grader Armani helps her mom find the best deals. "Mom tells me the budget, and I use CGI to figure out how to get everything we need within that budget."
